Morgan Freeman’s latest interview
In the latest film industry news, Morgan Freeman has tagged both African American and Black History Month as insults. In case you don’t know, Freeman is an American actor, narrator, and director.
When speaking with the Sunday Times in a recent interview, the 85-year-old actor revealed he was keen to publicly give his take on the use of the terms “African American” and “Black History Month”. During the interview, Freeman said he objected to the use of these terms. He further mentioned that both terms are insults and should be removed from the lexicon.
Reasons for Freeman’s Objection
When speaking on his objection to the use of both terms, the 85-year-old actor explained that using “Black History Month” is more like relegating his history to just a month. Freeman further noted that this is nothing but an insult to black history.
Here’s a brief of what Morgan Freeman said while speaking with the Sunday Times:
“You’re going to relegate my history to a month?”
Adding to this, Freeman said both “Black History and American history are completely intertwined.”
While further speaking in the interview, Morgan Freeman also revealed why the use of the term “African American” doesn’t sit well with him. He said the use of the term is just not accurate. Here’s what the 80-year-old actor said about it below:
“I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the N-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African American’.
“What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”
Morgan Freeman agrees with Denzel’s take on black lives
Like Freeman, Denzel Washington is an American actor and director. One of his popular quotes talks about why he’s proud to be black. According to the interview, Denzel also mentioned that black is not all he is. Instead, it’s just his cultural & historical background and genetic makeup.
In the interview, Freeman was asked by the Times whether or not he agreed with Denzel. Here’s what the 80-year-old actor said regarding the question:
“Yes, exactly. I’m in total agreement. You can’t define me that way.”
